2 Cars in the 600 Horsepower Club

For racing enthusiasts one of the most important specs for a car is the amount of horsepower it is able to produce.  While most production cars have been rising in the horsepower category for the last couple of decades today’s exotic supercars have completely blown away anything the traditional vehicles offer.  Here are two cars that offer 600 horsepower or more.

Dodge Viper SRT-10
The Dodge Viper SRT-10 is relatively cheap for a supercar boasting 600 horsepower.  At $85,000, it is within many enthusiasts reach.  It features an 8.4 liter cam in block, V10 that has two valves per cylinder and a relatively traditional engine (whopping 512 cubic inches) that uses brute force to create spot on 600 horses.

The Bugatti Veyron
If you are looking for something more exotic and you are incredibly rich, you might want to get on the list for the Bugatti Veyron.  The Veyron is pretty much the top of the food chain with a price tag of 1.5 million for starters.  The Bugatti Veyron has incredible specs that will just about blow any enthusiast away.  To start out, the 16 cylinder which is actually a twin off set of V-8 engines that utilizes all 16 cylinders creates an incredible 1001 horses.  These two huge engines actually share a common crankshaft and include four turbochargers.

Some other stunning facts about the Bugatti Veyron is that it can easily reach 0 to 60 in less than 3 seconds- 2.5 seconds to be exact (in case you had time to count).  As for top speed- how is 250 mph.  However, in order to reach this insane top speed you need the special “top speed key”.  As for gas mileage, don’t expect this beast to be fuel efficient.  In fact at the top speed of 250 mph, you can probably eek out about 2.46 mpg- we are approaching military tank fuel efficiency.

Bugatti Profile

The Bugatti car company was founded by Ettore Bugatti in the year 1909. The original company which was situated in Molsheim region of France was known for its some of the exclusively designed and fastest cars in the world.

At his young age Bugatti was very much fascinated by the automobile technology. During his time automobile industry has been a new field which was recently emerged. When he was 17, he was able to develop a tricycle which runs on motor. With his first motor vehicle, he participated in the race. Till 1909 he worked in different companies and developed different models. It was after the birth of his third son Jean Ettore Bugatti; he decided to start his own company. Initially he got loan from the bank to produce a few automobiles and five aircraft engines.

The first automobile from the Bugatti car company came out in the year 1910. In the same year, Bugatti cars participated in the races which was a turning point for the historical triumph of Ettore’s racing cars. Ernest Fridrich, the most reliable assistant of Ettore, represented Bugatti in races.

In the consecutive years, Bugatti won a series of races. Thus Bugatti’s remarkable performance made an innegligible presence in the races. In 1911 Bugatti entered in to contract with Peugeot to make engines for the production of Bebe Peugeot which eventually becomes a huge success.

At the time of First World War, Ettore Bugatti developed airplane engines for both the American as well as French government. The money which he received for this work brought him the necessary capital to enable him to expand the operations in the Molsheim plant. Thus the number of employees as well as production was increased. This was a milestone event in the history of Bugatti.

In the following years, Bugatti dominated in almost all the races by constantly acquiring first, second or third places. Till Great Depression of 1929 the company was at its peak. During 1914 itself, Ettore Bugatti dreamed of building a most expensive legendary car in the world. As a result of his hard work, his dream came in to realization on 1926 through the introduction of Royale models. Even according to the present market, it is the expensive car in the world. But it hit the market in the wrong time i.e. at the time of Great Depression. This expensive model severely affected the company’s financial position.

The Second World War and employees’ strike followed by the great depression very much affected the financial position of the company. The death of Ettore’s son Jean was also another important factor which very much affected the company’s existence. The production was declined due to insufficient capital. After the death of Ettore Bugatti in 1947 the company could not make a come back. The later models such as Type 251 failed to fulfill the expectations.

The company was later sold to Hispano-Suiza in 1963. From Hispano-Suiza it passes over to Snecma in 1968. The Bugatti was later acquired by Messier in 1977 and was later known as Messier-Bugatti. In 1998 Volkswagen legally acquired the name of Bugatti and start producing cars under this brand name. Under Volkswagen it developed many brands such as EB118, EB218, 18/3 Chiron etc. In the year 2000 Volkswagen founded Bugatti Automobiles SAS and it introduced the most powerful car ever seen, Bugatti Veyron 16/4 with a top speed of 253 mph. It is a 1000 hp car with sixteen cylinders. The car takes only 2.5sec to reach to reach 0-100kmph. A Bugatti Veyron 16/4 costs around $2.3 million, not including taxes.

Till now Bugatti works separately as a subsidiary unit of Volkswagen. The future project of Bugatti is Bugatti Lydia which has an astonishing 1175 hp with a top speed of 280 mph that costs around $3million.

Bugatti

Bugatti was founded by an Italian man named Ettore Bugatti, and his little car company was known as one of the best car manufacturers for motor racing in the world having taken many land speed records and won many grand Prix races across Europe – and also winning the first Monaco Grand Prix.  This success lasted the company all the way to 39 with consistent showings at rallies and races, culminating with the 1937 and 1939 win of the Le Mans.

 Bugatti Logo

They were originally designed to be super vehicles fused with art and with precision, having finishes done by hand on even the engine block, and even the most mundane safety wires being worked through the vehicle in a visually stunning manner.  Between 1921 and 1939 Bugatti’s wont more than forty race events and were considered the best in the business.  Tragedy struck with Ettore’s son was killed in one of his cars while testing it in 1939, soon after the income that was being made dried up and then World War 2 came along.  They lost the factory, the land, and were decimated. Then another son, Roland Bugatti, tried to bring it back in the 50’s, to no avail – but he did not give up.

In the 80’s Bugatti had largely been regulated into airplane parts and other such things, with the previous decade having seen Bugatti and another company Messier being combined to make Messier Bugatti, however in 87 an Italian named Romano Artioli bought Bugatti and formed a new company named Bugatti Automobile SpA.  Following this the new company built a new factory in Italy and new designs were on the table.  It was a new super-car, touted as the most technologically advanced vehicle of the time ever created and made, then as if it couldn’t seem better Artioli bought Lotus, the other big racing name – but recession doomed the effort, and in 95 they discontinued production.  For a while the name lay dormant, until a most familiar name came along and bought the company and the rights to use Bugatti. Volkswagen. Currently they are producing prototype super cars and preproduction super cars that can reach over 250 miles per hour – and many more will be built for the collector and luxury markets soon.
