Porsche 911 and 911 Turbo - 2009

Since 1976, the Porsche 911 has become infamous for its incredible power, great looks and very nicely crafted interior.  For the 2009 model, Porsche has pulled out all the stops to ensure that this car continues to garner the respect of its predecessors.  If you are looking for one of the fastest cars on the market that not only is great on the road, but track as well, the Porsche 911 and 911 Turbo definitely do not disappoint.

The 2009 Porsche 911 Tech Specs
For those looking for plenty of power and rocket type acceleration, the 911 is a winner.  Zoom from 0 to 60 in about 3.4 seconds in this baby, practically beating anything else on the road. Besides great acceleration, the power plant delivers 480 horsepower from a nicely done 3.6 liter Flat 6 engine.  Although the suspension is a little soft for many, the 911 offers great components including a 6 piston front brakes, Michelin Pilot sport tires and a very nicely done interior that makes the 911 a dream to drive.

The 2009 Porsche 911 Turbo
If you find that you need more power and why not, Porsche is also proud to present the 911 turbo.  With the 911 turbo, you do get some styling changes, but nothing to revolutionary, for instance, there are slight changes to the bumper, exhaust and taillights.  The main difference is a twin clutch gearbox which includes direct injection.  This means that your comparable 3.6 liter flat 6 engine is now turbocharged from 480 horsepower to 500 horsepower.   All in all, two very nicely done vehicles.  If you are a Porsche enthusiast, you can still keep your bragging rights with these two cars.

The Porsche Panamera

If you are a Porsche enthusiast, you probably have been hearing about the upcoming Panamera.  Over the last couple of years there has been a growing chatter about a car that takes its cues from the 911, but delivers a sedan for the family man that just can’t drive an average four door.  The Panamera looks great- yes even with 4 doors, this vehicle is smoking hot and as many Porsche enthusiasts have already blogged- very sexy.

Porsche Panamera

Porsche Panamera Tech Specs
So what are we looking at in a family car from Porsche?  Well if you were impressed with the Cayenne SUV, you will be blown away with the Panamera.  While the vehicle is definitely a sedan, for the first moments you set eyes on it, it actually looks like a coupe.  In fact, the beautiful lines of this vehicle offer a very sporty and swoopy hoodline and an overall nice shape that gives cues to slightly suggest this vehicle has four doors.

What really matters to most is what kind of power will this vehicle have and to put all at ease, it should be noted that in the true tradition of Porsche, power will come in a giant heaping.  Expect between 300 horsepower to 500 horsepower with at least a couple of engine choices.  In fact, if the buzz is correct, a hybrid version of the Panamera is in the cards as well.

While the photos are out and there are plenty of details leaked, much information is still up in the air and won’t be known for months or even a year or so.  As of now we can only guess that there will be a choice of a six speed manual transmission and an automatic trans- probably a double clutch.  As for price and delivery, many in the know expect this vehicle to be out late next summer or early fall with a price that approaches $75K to $100K USD.

Porsche

Porsche was founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche and his son Ferry (Ferdinand Anton) Porsche. Ferdinand Porsche was also the original designer of the VW Beetle that remained the Volkswagen standard for more than fifty years (1938-2003). When the car company was ordered by the German Government in 1933 to make a car that would be good for the masses, and thus the Porsche 64 was created through development and standardization that allowed many of the parts to be taken from the VW Beetle. It hit the German market in 1939. Ferdinand’s own son helped in the design department by creating his own vehicle, due to him never finding what he wanted in a car, and that became the 356. After the Second World War, the company began production that was severely hampered by a shortage of all materials. This lead them to have the 356 use beetle parts, such as the gears, the engine, and the small suspension system - but even with these donated parts the car had several key innovations that allowed to be a success and to drop the beetle parts over time, with the last ones being completely of Porsche manufacturing. Unfortunately in 1951 Ferdinand Porsche passed away from a stroke; however his son stepped in and took the reigns.

Seeing success in the Porsche 550 Spider, they soon developed a newer sleeker vehicle called the 911 and they are still in mass production as the 997. In the 70s the company changed legal format so that it now had a board of directors and several departments, with its first CEO. From this spawned the 928 - the first replacement to the 911 series… but the 911 has outlived the 928 for 12 years now. From 1993 to 2002 the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche was chairman of Volkswagen, and through his efforts Porsche remained renowned for its engineering, and its class. In 2002 a new manufacturing facility opened in Leipzig in Saxony, along with the unveiling of a brand new vehicle the Cayenne.

Three years ago the famed Carrera GT began production with a price tag of 400k+ and a horsepower rating of 605 out of the lot. Throughout this decade the Porsche family has been in full control of the company through stockholding shares, and recently they have bought more shares in Volkswagen, and now have a minority blocking vote- meaning that if they don’t like a decision by Volkswagen they can and most likely will block it from occurring, in addition to this they are also investing more and may one day have a majority share depending on how much more they buy. Today the most popular vehicle that Porsche manufactures is still the 911 line; however the Cayenne has occasionally taken first in North American markets.

In the most recent development as of this month the EU courts have ruled a law invalid, which was one that stated that no shareholder can exercise more than 20% control despite having a larger sale - leading to the possibility of Volkswagen being taken over. In order to prevent this the Porsche family has increased shares past the 30% mark in an effort to keep the company as-is, and looks to be prepared to take it over themselves should another attempt to do so.

The Close Ties Between Porsche And Volkswagen

The Volkswagen and Porsche automobile companies are two of the most recognizable brand names in the industry. They both appeal to different demographics, with Porsche being more focused towards the luxury sports car market and Volkwagen focusing more on the economy car market. Each company was founded and remains based in Germany, but the similarities and ties do not end there.

Porsche and Volkswagen Justice

Porsche was founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche, before founding his own company he was the original designer for Volkswagen. Many of Porsche’s original designs stayed with the Volkswagen company for years, he was in fact the lead designer in charge of designing what would become known as the Volkswagen Bug. In fact Porsche’s first car put out on the market in 1938, the Porsche 64, was built and assembled with many components borrowed from the Volkswagen Beetle. As late as 1948, th Porsche 356 also used many Volkswagen parts and components.

Porsche Babe

In 1969 the two companies would jointly produce the VW-Porsche 914 and 914-6. The standard model 914 made use of a 4 cylinder Volkswagen engine, while the 914-6 used a 6 cylinder Porsche engine. The mid 1970’s saw the Volkswagen-Porsche relationship expand to also include the Audi car company. Continuing their tradition of working together, as recently as 2002, a Porsche vehicle (the Porsche Cayenne) was put on the market that shared the entire chassis with both a Volkswagen and Audi automobile.

The relationship between these two companies was made official in 2005 when Porsche purchased an 18% stake in Volkswagen. Porsche has continued to buy more and more of Volkswagen, usually in attempts to keep Volkswagen from being taken over by other automobile manufacturers. With this partial ownership of Volkswagen by Porsche, it is plain to see that the relationship between these two companies which started in the early 1900’s will continue on into the foreseeable future.
