2 Cars in the 600 Horsepower Club

For racing enthusiasts one of the most important specs for a car is the amount of horsepower it is able to produce.  While most production cars have been rising in the horsepower category for the last couple of decades today’s exotic supercars have completely blown away anything the traditional vehicles offer.  Here are two cars that offer 600 horsepower or more.

Dodge Viper SRT-10
The Dodge Viper SRT-10 is relatively cheap for a supercar boasting 600 horsepower.  At $85,000, it is within many enthusiasts reach.  It features an 8.4 liter cam in block, V10 that has two valves per cylinder and a relatively traditional engine (whopping 512 cubic inches) that uses brute force to create spot on 600 horses.

The Bugatti Veyron
If you are looking for something more exotic and you are incredibly rich, you might want to get on the list for the Bugatti Veyron.  The Veyron is pretty much the top of the food chain with a price tag of 1.5 million for starters.  The Bugatti Veyron has incredible specs that will just about blow any enthusiast away.  To start out, the 16 cylinder which is actually a twin off set of V-8 engines that utilizes all 16 cylinders creates an incredible 1001 horses.  These two huge engines actually share a common crankshaft and include four turbochargers.

Some other stunning facts about the Bugatti Veyron is that it can easily reach 0 to 60 in less than 3 seconds- 2.5 seconds to be exact (in case you had time to count).  As for top speed- how is 250 mph.  However, in order to reach this insane top speed you need the special “top speed key”.  As for gas mileage, don’t expect this beast to be fuel efficient.  In fact at the top speed of 250 mph, you can probably eek out about 2.46 mpg- we are approaching military tank fuel efficiency.

The Viper Name Plate to Be Sold

In the 1990’s one car that was huge for sporting American muscle and performance wrapped in good looks was the Dodge Viper. While Dodge has since been bought by Daimler (originally part of Daimler- Chrysler) and subsequently split again (still under the Chrysler badge) Chrysler is now looking for a potential buyer.

Chrysler has always been the small fish of the big 3 car makers and in today’s market with all 3 car makers on the verge of bankruptcy, Chrysler is looking to sell some of its most popular (but low margin) name plates.

Dodge Viper GTS - Babe

The Dodge Viper started as a 1992 model and today it is still one of the most respected sport cars on the road. With a V10, 8.4 liter engine, most sports cars can’t touch this beast on the track or street. Today’s fourth generation ZB Viper is incredible as it produces a whopping 600 horsepower, 90 hp more than previous models. The ZB can easily accelerate from 0 to 60 in about 3.5 seconds and 0 to 100 in about 7.6- that is about 11.5 quarter mile hitting approximately 129 mph. Don’t worry, the top speed for this incredible car is over 200 beating some of the best exotics out there (202 mph for the coupe version, the roadster reaches only 197 mph).

While there is much to be proud of the Viper, with the potential sale of the Viper to a foreign buyer, it can make many enthusiasts very sad to say the least. The one thing that many Americans like about their sports cars is not the finesse or elegance, but the rawness in power and aggressiveness they display. While there is no buyer announced yet, as soon as the Dodge brass commit, it is very likely that the Viper will be put on the auctioning block and sold very quickly.

The 2010 Dodge EV

Big News Today from the auto industry, one of the largest vehicle manufacturers in the world Chrysler will be manufacturing and selling electric vehicles as early as 2010.  For car tuning enthusiasts that are looking for an all electric vehicle in the similar vein as Tesla Motors, The 2010 Dodge EV will surely please.  While details are still scant, there were a few things mentioned today to give the public some idea of what type of vehicle is in the works.  Here are just some of the tidbits we learned about today.

The 2010 Dodge EV Will be an All Electric Roadster
Chrysler is looking to enter the electric market in 2010 with a bang.  Looking probably to go head to head with Tesla Motors and their $109,000 roadster, the Dodge EV will be a high performance, all electric vehicle.  It is currently being designed with the help of Lotus Cars Ltd and current performance is rated at 0 to 60 in less than 5 seconds and the ability to run a distance of about 200 miles on a full charge.  A full battery charge would take about 8 hours with a 110 volt connection and half that with 220 volt connection.  Besides an all electric sportser, Chrysler has also hinted that it may produce a hybrid roadster that will have great performance with less sticker shock.

The Key is in the Battery
Obviously, the most important component of an electric vehicle is the battery and Chrysler has been working with a variety of suppliers and with many organizations doing cutting edge research on battery materials.  It looks like battery technology is advancing pretty quickly and will be powerful enough within the next few years to propel the first of an onslaught of many new electric vehicles.
