Chrysler ME Four-Twelve

Chrysler every once in a while surprises even the most jaded car enthusiasts.  One vehicle that pretty much blew the doors off of many car enthusiasts was the Chrysler ME Four-Twelve.  While this is a concept supercar, the idea itself was amazing and as the final vehicle was created, if it would ever go into production, it would surely garner much attention and many buyers.

Chrysler ME Four-Twelve

What is the ME Four-Twelve?
Well, the Chrysler ME Four Twelve stands for Mid Engine, Four turbo boosters and twelve cylinder engine.  When this name is explained, most car tuning enthusiasts usually drop their jaw in awe.  While it probably will never be produced, most engineers would probably state that this vehicle would cost about $150K to produce- which isn’t bad considering most supercars are two to three times more expensive.

As stated the Chrysler ME Four-Twelve offers a 6 liter V12 that produces an incredible 850 horsepower.  How does it achieve this feat, well for starters air being shot into the cylinders is at 20 psi. However, even with this incredible power plant under the hood, you don’t need special fuel to run this baby. Regular, premium unleaded fuel that you buy at your local gas station does the trick- due to the compression ratio of 9:1 instead of the higher ratios that most supercars use (12:1).

The Chrysler ME Four-Twelve approaches the record holder for horsepower per pound.  The ME weighs in at about 3,000 pounds giving it about 145 horsepower per liter- extremely impressive numbers and pretty much coming close to the Bugatti Veyron which offers 1,000 horsepower.  While the Chrysler ME Four-Twelve won’t be available in your local Chrysler’s showroom anytime soon, we hope as enthusiasts that lessons and technology learned from this vehicle will show up in future models.

The Viper Name Plate to Be Sold

In the 1990’s one car that was huge for sporting American muscle and performance wrapped in good looks was the Dodge Viper. While Dodge has since been bought by Daimler (originally part of Daimler- Chrysler) and subsequently split again (still under the Chrysler badge) Chrysler is now looking for a potential buyer.

Chrysler has always been the small fish of the big 3 car makers and in today’s market with all 3 car makers on the verge of bankruptcy, Chrysler is looking to sell some of its most popular (but low margin) name plates.

Dodge Viper GTS - Babe

The Dodge Viper started as a 1992 model and today it is still one of the most respected sport cars on the road. With a V10, 8.4 liter engine, most sports cars can’t touch this beast on the track or street. Today’s fourth generation ZB Viper is incredible as it produces a whopping 600 horsepower, 90 hp more than previous models. The ZB can easily accelerate from 0 to 60 in about 3.5 seconds and 0 to 100 in about 7.6- that is about 11.5 quarter mile hitting approximately 129 mph. Don’t worry, the top speed for this incredible car is over 200 beating some of the best exotics out there (202 mph for the coupe version, the roadster reaches only 197 mph).

While there is much to be proud of the Viper, with the potential sale of the Viper to a foreign buyer, it can make many enthusiasts very sad to say the least. The one thing that many Americans like about their sports cars is not the finesse or elegance, but the rawness in power and aggressiveness they display. While there is no buyer announced yet, as soon as the Dodge brass commit, it is very likely that the Viper will be put on the auctioning block and sold very quickly.

Eagle

Eagle was founded in 1988 and went out of business ten years later; however doing its time it was a very innovative car. The sports car made, called the Talon, was quite popular for this smaller car brand, and it found a great market in sports car enthusiast drivers along with their Talon Coupe being also popular - how else would it have sold more than 120,000? AMC Eagle was the father of the Eagle, and when AMC was bought, Chrysler decided to give Eagle its own brand. Most of the eagle vehicles were rebadged vehicles that had been actually made by Mitsubishi or by Chrysler - however the Eagle Premier and Medallion were unique and designed by Renault. In addition to this the Talon was also produced (as previously mentioned) and was the most popular of the Eagle branded vehicles. Unfortunately Eagle suffered from poor name and car popularity, and few knew of Eagle itself. In addition to that the car sellers and car lots were eager to pimp out jeep more than Eagle, since Jeep had more name brand recognition and received support from Chrysler.

Eagle Premier - Eagle Cars

When the decision to throw the ax was made, Chrysler decided to kill the brand off slowly with 96 being the first year that they started to discontinue auto lines, starting with Mitsubishi rebadges, and then the Eagle Vision, following after that was the Eagle Talon - and when that was discontinued so was the Eagle brand and makes. They had had plans for a redesigned vision at one point to come out in 99, however those plans fell through and vision prototypes were scrapped. Instead the car became the 300M Chrysler. Thus far there have been no plans to sell the brand or liquidate the trademark and all of its patents. It lies dormant and probably to never be used again seeing how efficiently they removed all traces of the Eagle from their lines.

Chrysler

Chrysler is a dual manufacturing company – meaning they produce their own car models (and have been since 1925) along with making them for Dodge (since 1914) and have recently had their share of troubled times. The manufacturing company was brought into this world by Walter P. Chrysler in 1925 when another company, the Maxwell MC, was restructured into the Chrysler name and family. Walter assumed command of the company and then continued to manufacture the vehicles for many years to come, with the first innovations to hit the market in streamlined cars to increase efficiency and reduce drag and other problems.

They also had other brands under them for a vehicle parts brand, and a few others such as Airtemp for Heating and Cooling of buildings and also cars.  In the 60’s they incorporated a drastic and new design concept involving the UniBody – a car that was made with a full body rather than just a frame and then built up; in addition to being stronger, safer, and more crash resistant it made production costs a whole lot cheaper to do.  By this time Chrysler was one of the “Big Three” in automotive construction, having just Ford and GM as their competitors.

In the 70’s Chrysler had a crisis in which their profits were not enough to keep the company afloat for very long, and risked having to go bankrupt – during the recession this would have had a drastic impact upon employees and the entire economy.  To save the company they rallied for a load, in which they received 1.5 billion dollars.  After that, and with the innovation of several new platforms and the minivan, they slowly regained their hold and by 1985 were repaying the loan quickly.  With sales of their Dodge and Jeep and their own Chrysler branded vehicles on the rise they expanded to Europe – and then ceased to exist as a company in 1998.  How?  They were bought by Daimler-Benz, creating Daimler-Chrysler.  Then, this year, they sold the major stake in Chrysler to Cerberus Capital Management, at a hefty price. Further developments wait to be seen, but all vehicles are still in production and are releasing new models.
