Car sharing has over the years evolved as a workable solution to the problems of traffic and pollution, especially in urban areas. Set on the simple model of multiple car ownership, car sharing entails members cooperating together in making use of a pool of cars, in a common geographical area.

Car sharing, as the term implies, refers to sharing of automobiles by individuals for short periods of time. Individuals can rent cars on hourly or daily basis to commute distances within a specified area.

On a small scale, car sharing can be an arrangement between individuals and on a larger level it may be operated by a car rental agency. However, private sharing arrangements are usually referred to as ‘car pooling’ or ‘ride sharing’. Car sharing is seen as a cost-effective method of traveling, especially for urbanites, who prefer public transport and/or need cars only occasionally.

Car sharing originated in Switzerland where it was first launched in 1987. Thereafter is spread across Europe and finally arrived in America in 1993. However, reference to car sharing can be traced as early as the 1940s but at that time it was in an infantile stage. As the concept of car sharing caught on, various changes were made in the working of its system. Improvisations included computerized systems of operation, better parking facilities, multiple pick-up/drop points and advanced reservation facilities. Also, car sharing progressed from non-profit organizations to profit-making agencies.

How car sharing works?

A car sharing agency rents vehicles to authorized drivers for specified hours or a whole day. Advance reservation of vehicle is required and the fees may be charged per hour or per mile. Picking-up and returning the car is the hirer’s responsibility. Further, it has to be ensured that the vehicle is returned in a good and clean state.

Terms of use of car sharing usually vary according to the rental agencies and regions. Rates, inclusive of insurance and fuel charges, are pre-determined. Agencies can check driving records of hirers. They often offer customer-friendly services like drop points that are near public transport junctions.

One of the more popular American made sports cars for decades has been the Corvette. The Corvette is manufactured by General Motors owned Chevrolet and is one of the signature cars of not only that company, but of the American presence in the automotive industry as a whole. The Corvette has captured both the fantasy and imagination of the public and remains one of the more sought after vehicles in the United States and abroad. Many limited edition and classic Corvettes have sold for serious money at auction, proving that the desire for these cars is not temporary or on a fly-by-night basis. The Corvette continues to be the epitome of “cool”.

Here are some fun car facts that you may not have known about the Chevrolet Corvette:

-The original front emblem logo on the Corvettes that made the trade show circuit featured a checkered flag and an American flag crossed, later Chevrolet was alerted to the fact that it is illegal to use an American flag on a trademark and the logo was changed.

-As revolutionary that the Corvette was when introduced in 1953, the only part or component included in its manufacturing that was not already available in other Chevrolet models was the fiberglass body.

-Manual transmission was listed as an option on the 1954 Chevrolet Corvette, but no model was ordered, manufactured, or delivered that year with a manual transmission.

-The 1958 Chevrolet Corvette was the first ‘Vette with factory installed seat belts.

-The first year that an AM/FM radio was offered as an option in a Corvette was 1968.

-The 1963 through 1967 Corvettes were known as “Sting Rays”. The model name disappeared in 1968, but returned in 1969 only to be spelled as one word, “Stingray”

-The last Corvette manufactured to run on the old style “leaded” fuel was produced in 1974.

-The most Chevrolet Corvettes ever manufactured in one year was over 53,807 in 1979.

-The first Corvette produced with windshield wipers that clear water in the same direction instead of opposing directions was made in 1997.

-In 2005, Chevrolet manufactured Corvettes without the famous pop-up headlights for the first time since 1962.

Disney Pixar oficially announced the long term expected sequel of the blockbuster sucess – Cars!

Cars 2 will again be a film by Pixar Animation Studios and it’s scheduled for release in Summer 2012.

Here is the official synopsis for Cars 2:

All the world’s a racetrack as racing superstar Lightning McQueen zooms back into action, with his best friend Mater in tow, to take on the globe’s fastest and finest in this thrilling high-octane new installment of the “Cars” saga.

Overhaulin’

Overhaulin’ is a reality TV show which gets classic cars and does them up without the knowledge of the owner. How it works is that a friend or family of someone who owns a classic car applies to Overhaulin’. Without the awareness of the owner, they take the car away and in a week turn it into a car which demands attention.

The show is mainly based in Calfornia, United States of America and started back in 2004. It is hosted by Adrienne Janic, Chris Jacob and Chip Foose. In 2007 the shows 50th episode was made.

Some of the cars that have been overhauled include a Ford F150, a Ford Mustang and a Dodge Magnum. There are also plans to overhaul a Humvee used in Iraq by CNN correspondents. Even celebrities have had their cars overhauled; a Ford F100 was overhauled for Nick Lacheys brother, and a 1969 Buick GS was overhauled for a friend of Motley Crue.
