Examining The Top Ten Most Stolen Cars List

Behind our homes, our automobiles are usually our second most valuable asset. Even with the right type and proper amount of insurance, an automobile theft can cause major disruptions to our lives. One of the things to think about may be whether or not our specific vehicle is one that is targeted by car thieves. When it comes to auto theft, different cars are stolen for different reasons.

Car Thief

Sometimes its opportunity, as in an unlocked car in a secluded location, or worse an idling car outside of someones home. Sometimes its a dark road and a car that is too tempting because of all the high tech stereo or DVD/monitor equipment. And then there are the automobiles that are taken as part of a targeting effort focused at high end automobiles in high end neighborhoods. Whatever the reason, or combination of reasons, here is a look at the latest information about the top ten most stolen vehicles as reported by the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

  1. 1995 Honda Civic
  2. 1991 Honda Accord
  3. 1989 Toyota Camry
  4. 1997 Ford F-150 Pickup
  5. 2005 Dodge Ram Pickup
  6. 1994 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Pickup
  7. 1994 Nissan Sentra
  8. 1994 Dodge Caravan
  9. 1994 Saturn SL
  10. 1990 Acura Integra

One of the more misleading things about this report is why some of these vehicles are on the list. A number of these models are produced in a higher number than some of the more unique or luxury models. For example, there may be more Honda Civics stolen partially because there are more Honda Civics made. Other automobiles like Cadillac Escalades, Chevrolet Corvettes, and Ford Mustangs are also targeted, but there aren’t as many of those compared to some of the listed models.

Another thing we can notice when looking at that list is that many of the vehicles on there from the Honda Civics to the Nissan Sentras, and even the Toyota Camrys, are also the type of vehicles that are popular with the young crowd and street racers. These are the types of vehicles you see driving around with all sorts of modifications having been done to them. Lowered to the street, tinted windows, LED lighting, lettering or graphics on the windows and sides, spoilers in the back, and other add-ons are familiar sights to see on some of these cars. This could be an additional reason that these vehicles are targeted by thieves.

Whatever the reason they appear on the list, there is one thing you can be sure of about the vehicles that are listed here. If yours is one of them, you will be paying higher insurance rates than you would for a vehicle not on the list. Though you may think twice about buying a vehicle that appears on the list, it will also soothe some of the fear to know that the very same National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that for the third straight year the overall number of auto thefts in the United States has dropped.
