Convertible Car Seats

If you are a parent, you already know how important it is to have your child safe and secure in a car seat when traveling. Unfortunately, buying the right car seat for your child can be confusing. There are so many different types of car seats available and it seems that each state or region has different laws and requirements. However, for those that have children, one of the most popular types of convertible car seats available is the convertible car seat.

Convertible car seats are a category of car seats made for children usually from the age of 1 to preschool years. Convertible car seats are generally made for children with a weight of at least 20 pounds. It is always important to check the specific car seat you are buying or using to determine if your child can use it properly. The term convertible car seat comes from the feature giving the seat the ability to either face rear or forward. A rear facing seat is when the child’s head is closest to the driver instead of traditionally seating forward. It should also be noted that in most circumstances a rear facing seat is much safer and should be used as long as your child can fit comfortably.

Once a child has grown, his or her legs will no longer fit comfortably facing rearwards, in this case, the convertible seat can be adjusted to face forwards. This seat is usually used for children from about 1 year of age to 3 or 4 (depending on the size of your child).

Convertible car seats should have several basic features included for the safest travel possible. These features include a five point harness, an overhead shield and a T- shield. A 5 point harness keeps your child’s shoulders, hips and torso secure even in an accident. An overhead shield is usually padded accessory that swings over the child like a tray to add extra protection. In addition, a T- shield attaches to the shoulder straps for additional protection to the torso and body.

For those parents looking to purchase a convertible seat, it should be noted that there is no brand or seat that is considered the best or most safe. As a parent you should choose a seat that fits your child properly and install it correctly. This will ensure that your child is well protected when traveling in your vehicle.
